20 Years Experience

Chicago, IL

Male, 60

For twenty years I officiated high school, AAU and park district basketball games, retiring recently. For a few officiating is the focus of their occupation, while for most working as an umpire or basketball referee is an avocation. I started ref'ing to earn beer money during college, but it became a great way to stay connected to the best sports game in the universe. As a spinoff, I wrote a sports-thriller novel loosely based on my referee experiences titled, Advantage Disadvantage

Kevin Durant basketball dribbling move was not carrying. my understanding your hand would have to be underneath the ball. http://start.wow.com/video?q=kevin+durant+carrying+%3F&s_it=video-ans&sfVid=true&videoId=59282157782DE326727F59282157782DE326727F&s_chn=google&s_pt=ch-basketball-ynv&hp_uid=20170528192342539&pt_uid=CL754ouok9QCFcZKDQodyJwLzQ&v_t=ntb

If the ball comes to a rest, the dribble has ended, and then subsequent dribbles would be double dribble (commonly known as carrying the ball). If your hand is on top of the ball clearly no carrying. If your hand is under the ball, clearly a violation. The side represents a tougher call. What I looked for is if the hand is on the side, does the dribbler change ball direction in the direction of the hand before dribbling - in other words is the hand pulling the ball backwards? If so double dribble or carrying the ball. In the Kevin Durant video, based on high school rules it is clear to me that he is carrying the ball.

Time expires while shot in air. Ball bounces before going through hoop, untouched by a player. Does it count?

Asked by Matt about 9 years ago

A try (rulebook jargon for a shot) ends when it is clear that it will not go directly in the ring. So if a try goes up in the air and then bounces on the floor, the try ended, and in your example time ran out. No basket.

When a player his line up For a foul shot and he is moving just his upper body to get the other person to violate Can the player do that

Asked by Jacob the official about 9 years ago

It is unsportsmanlike and it should void the free throw.

On a fastbreak Player A has stolen ball and is going in for a layin, his teammate B is trailing the play and is run into by defensive #1- A foul called on player 1 as A makes layin. Basket good. How many Free throws would player B get?

Asked by SLBEND over 9 years ago

Ok, so A1 is going in for a layup. After the ball leaves A1's hands, A2 is fouled by B1. Count A1's basket. The foul by B1 is a common foul, meaning one and one free throws are attempted only if Team B has 7, 8 or 9 fouls. If Team B has 10+ fouls, two free throws are attempted. If Team B has 6 or less fouls (in this half for all of these) then A gets the ball out of bounds with no free throws.

Is it Outabounds if the ball hits the back of the backboard

Asked by Hodgkin about 9 years ago

Yes. Also on a rectangular backboard if yhe ball goes over the top it is out of bounds.

With 1,4 seconds left in the game, Team A is inbounding the ball on the sideline. A1 passes the ball into A2, who then passes it to A3 who shoots a 3-ponter and makes it, but the clock never started. is the basket good?

Asked by hendu about 9 years ago

Since the timer or the clock had a malfunction, the referee must mak an assessment. Given all the passes most likely the basket should not count.
